Leonardo was fascinated by the idea of human flight, and over his lifetime he sketched numerous machines with the aim of self-powered flight. In recent times, some of his less fanciful machines have been built and shown to be sound from an engineering perspective.

Da Vinci harboured a great desire to discover what made nature work, and his work with the anatomy of the human body, along with disections of animals and plant studies, demonstrate an amazing degree of understanding. The most famous result of this interest is the Vitruvian Man.
Impressions
As well as the fascination with machines and nature, Leonardo wanted to document and understand the topography of his world. He developed an extensive set of maps, demonstrating real skill as a cartographer.
